NSA student athletes post best ever academic results!
The November 28th issue of the National Ski Academy’s electronic newsletter, E-Snooze, commented positively on the student athletes comprising the NSA class of 2008 - 2009.
E-Snooze reported the new students enrolled in the NSA’s “Racing and Academic Performance Program” appeared to be a bright and focused group. Sharp young people who had demonstrated at the Europe six week camp that they devote the same dedication to their academics as their ski racing. Their focus had already impressed coaches, teachers and staff at the “Home of Ski Racing and Academic Excellence”.
Appears that early assessment was on target.
Last week, NSA Academic Director Brian Traynor bubbled with enthusiasm as he told E-Snooze that the Semester 1 academic performance was the best ever for a group of NSA student athletes.
Consider these results for the semester: a perfect 100% in course completion by NSA student athletes compared to 98% over the past five years. And, the overall NSA student average for Semester 1 was 85.6% besting the average mark for the past five years of 84%!
According to Brian: “ In my 23 year career in supporting and leading the academic program at the National Ski Academy, I can simply and proudly state that this is the strongest academic group we have had at NSA. The outstanding marks achieved by this group of student athletes reflects their hard work, their time management skills and their maturity. I could not be prouder of all of them.”
Of particular importance to NSA’s graduating student athletes, the Grade 12 semester 1 student average was 87.4%. Brian proudly notes that several graduating NSA student athletes have received early acceptances and scholarship offers from leading Canadian universities – Western, Guelph, Waterloo, Bishops, Acadia, Mount Allison, Sir Sanford Fleming - - and US colleges – U of Denver, U of New Hampshire and Williams College - - with more to follow.
Congratulations to all NSA student athletes on their Semester 1 academic performance. And a huge thank you to Brian, NSA’s teachers and tutors, and Hanne Nielsen and her colleagues at the Simcoe County District School Board for their accommodation of NSA student academic needs. That co-operation and the NSA students’ dedication delivered best ever results.
Academic Program Overview - - Brian Traynor, NSA Academic Director
Our Academic Director carefully structures the academic program to ensure that all facets of the students’ educational objectives are met. Through our unique partnership with the Simcoe County District School Board, the NSA is able to provide a comprehensive independent learning program which enables students to gain their high school diplomas and to prepare for post-secondary education.
Students choose between local high school or in-house courses which are administered by qualified and professional teachers. The local high school program offers a schedule for the NSA students which allows them the opportunity to study in a school setting while maintaining their training and competition schedules. The in-house academic program operates through a partnership with the Continuing Education Department of the Simcoe County District School Board and incorporates small group instruction with individual attention which allows for greater flexibility. All programs meet the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Mandatory evening tutorial classes are held in the Academy study hall. During training camps, academics are maintained by highly qualified tutors who accompany athletes at the camps. The tutors run study halls and assist students with homework.
Each student’s situation regarding school credits, future plans and learning objectives is carefully reviewed with guidance counsellors, academic coordinators and the student’s parents throughout the school year. Progress reports, report cards and parent meetings keep students and parents up to date and informed.
