YOUR SUPPORT ENSURES THE NSA’S FUTURE
The National Ski Academy exists today thanks to the entrepreneurial vision of Founder Jurg Gfeller and philanthropic donors. Jurg’s founding principles – embracing the dedicated young student athletes who choose NSA with the passion to become accomplished ski racers, enlightened students and tomorrow’s leaders – still root and guide us today.
Support from our community is integral to the success of the National Ski Academy. The collective contributions our generous donors make each year directly impact the Academy from programming in the classroom, training on the ski hill and in the gym, our historic home Tornaveen and student financial assistance.
Our priorities this past year has been on our facilities. Tornaveen is our 126 year old home and campus at 200 Oak Street. The 12,000-square-foot heritage designated mansion is the heart of the Academy where our students learn, work-out and live. A majestic home of its generation requires routine maintenance and repairs, but at times needs larger scale improvements and renovations. We are at this juncture. This year a new commercial oven was installed, the kitchen floor was replaced, the roof of the house was replaced and the new tuning shed arrived on the property.
Priorities for Tornaveen this year, include:
- Necessary repairs and updates to the gymnasium, and
- Finishing the interior of the new tuning shed.
We are looking to our community’s philanthropic generosity to help support these projects.
Gymnasium
The gymnasium project will include new windows, a new roof, interior and exterior painting, and brick tucking/cement repair work as required. These essential improvements will provide a brighter, dry, and improved temperature-controlled space for our athletes to train within.
This gym is also rented to local fitness groups providing rental income to NSA. It has also been used by the local Special Olympics chapter. These improvements will make the space more appealing to these third parties, and hopefully other community groups.
Also, the south end of the gym can be transformed into a mini theatre allowing the hosting of larger gatherings, such as when legend Nancy Greene spoke to the students and parents a few years ago.
Tuning Shed
The current plan is for permanent tuning stations to be built next summer. This season portable units will be used until funds are raised, but also as Sami and the team decide the best lay-out for the space. A more immediate requirement will be the purchase of individual vacuum units for quick and efficient clean-up of wax scrapings and edge shavings etc.
The past 35 years of philanthropic support has enabled the National Ski Academy to be the superior skiing and schooling option in Canada, which our students are benefitting from today. We hope you will join us in carrying this tradition forward with a donation to NSA to help support our current priorities. Participation is important, as collectively, no matter the size of the gift, the impact can be significant.
